Rising from the ancient desert floors of the American Southwest, the Sonoran and Mojave, and Baja California, Larrea tridentata — Chaparral, or Creosote Bush — is believed to be one of the oldest living plants on Earth. Clonal colonies of Creosote Bush have been carbon-dated to over 11,000 years of age, making it a near-immortal presence in the driest, most demanding landscapes of North America. Indigenous peoples of the Southwest — the Tohono O'odham, Seri, Cahuilla, and others — developed extensive medicinal traditions around this desert elder, using it for pain, skin conditions, infections, and a wide range of internal complaints.
Chaparral contains nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) — one of the most potent natural antioxidants ever identified — along with flavonoids and volatile oils that collectively give it powerful antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activity. Traditional uses include supporting healthy skin by addressing the internal inflammatory and microbial roots of surface conditions; acting as a blood purifier and liver antioxidant; easing arthritic and rheumatic discomfort; and supporting respiratory health. It is one of the most deeply bitter herbs in the Western tradition — a characteristic linked to its profound liver-stimulating and detoxifying action. In the Sonoran and Southwest Indigenous spiritual tradition, Chaparral holds sacred status as a plant of purification, endurance, and connection to the ancient desert spirit — used in healing ceremonies and as a smoke medicine for clearing and blessing.
For a deep blood-purifying and liver antioxidant blend, pair Chaparral with our Dandelion Leaf for complementary hepatic support and gentle detoxification, our Burdock as a blood purifier and lymphatic tonic, and our Red Clover Herb for gentle blood-cleansing and phytoestrogen support.
Important safety note: Chaparral has been associated with rare but serious cases of liver toxicity when taken in large amounts or for prolonged periods. Use only in small amounts for short durations (no more than 1–2 weeks). Not for internal use by those with pre-existing liver or kidney disease. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek medical guidance before internal use if you have any health conditions or take medications. As always, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
