A tenacious biennial herb whose seed heads (the original inspiration for Velcro) cling to animal fur and human clothing alike, Arctium lappa — Burdock — grows in the disturbed soils, roadsides, and forest edges of Europe, Asia, and North America. In Japan, where it is cultivated as a root vegetable called 'gobo' and eaten regularly as a food, burdock has been a nutritional and medicinal staple for over a millennium. In European folk medicine and the 19th-century American Eclectic tradition, it held equal esteem as a primary blood purifier and skin remedy.

Burdock Root is one of the most celebrated depuratives — or blood and tissue cleansers — in the Western herbal tradition. Its inulin content supports a healthy prebiotic environment in the gut; its bitter compounds stimulate liver and gallbladder function; and its role as a gentle lymphatic and kidney tonic makes it a cornerstone of formulas for chronic skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and acne, where internal detoxification supports external skin health. Traditional Chinese Medicine has used burdock root and seed for over 2,000 years to 'clear heat' and support respiratory health. Modern research has explored burdock's potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and blood sugar-modulating properties. In folk magic, burdock root has been carried for protection, used in bath waters to remove hexes, and incorporated into uncrossing and cleansing rituals.

For a deep blood-purifying and liver detox blend, pair Burdock with our Dandelion Leaf for complementary hepatic support, our Yellow Dock Root for liver stimulation and iron support, and our Nettle Leaf as a deeply nutritive blood-building and anti-inflammatory partner.

Burdock belongs to the Asteraceae (daisy) family — those with ragweed or related family allergies should introduce carefully. It may potentiate the effects of blood-thinning medications and diabetes medications due to its blood sugar and anti-platelet effects. Those with active kidney disease should consult a practitioner before using high amounts. As always, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.

* Premier blood purifier and depurative — supports deep tissue and lymphatic cleansing

* Prebiotic inulin content feeds beneficial gut bacteria
* Used for chronic skin conditions like eczema, acne, and psoriasis from the inside out
* Traditional Chinese Medicine herb for clearing heat and supporting respiratory health
* Used in folk magic for protection, uncrossing, and cleansing rituals

1. Measure 1–2 teaspoons of Burdock Root per 8 oz of water.
2. Add to cold water, bring to a simmer, cover, and decoct for 20 minutes.
3. Strain and drink warm.
4. Drink 1–2 cups daily as a long-term tonic for liver, skin, and blood health.
5. Burdock Root has a pleasant, earthy, slightly sweet flavor — it pairs beautifully with Dandelion Leaf and Yellow Dock Root.

For a classic depurative spring cleanse blend, combine Burdock Root, Dandelion Leaf, and Nettle Leaf in equal parts. Drink 2 cups daily for 3–6 weeks.
