Quassia

Native to the tropical regions of South America and the Caribbean, Quassia amara — Quassia — bears the name of Graman Quassi, an enslaved man from Suriname who discovered the bark’s extraordinary medicinal properties in the 18th century and shared them with Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus. This remarkable story of African healing knowledge gave the herb its place permanently in the global pharmacopoeia, and the bark has since been used across Caribbean, South American, and European folk medicine as a potent digestive tonic.

Quassia contains quassin — one of the most intensely bitter naturally occurring compounds known — making it a powerful bitter tonic for digestive health. 1. Add just 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of Quassia bark to 10 oz of cold water in a pot.
2. Soak overnight (cold infusion) or bring to a gentle simmer for 10–15 minutes.
3. Strain and consume 2–4 oz before meals as a digestive bitter to stimulate digestion.
4. To improve palatability, add ginger, orange peel, or cinnamon. A drizzle of honey can offset the bitterness.
