One of the oldest and most widely revered magical herbs in human history, Artemisia vulgaris - Mugwort - is named for Artemis, the Greek goddess of the moon, the hunt, and the wild. Used across Europe, Asia, and the Americas for thousands of years, it appears in the Anglo-Saxon Nine Herbs Charm, in Traditional Chinese Medicine, in the esoteric traditions of Japan, and in the folk herbalism of nearly every indigenous culture where it grows.
Mugwort is traditionally valued as a bitter digestive tonic that stimulates bile production, supports healthy stomach acid levels, eases bloating, and promotes smooth digestive function. It has also been used to support healthy menstrual cycle regularity and ease cramping, making it a trusted ally in women's herbalism. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, dried Mugwort is burned over acupuncture points in the practice of moxibustion, where its warming energy is used to stimulate circulation, ease chronic cold and damp conditions, and support the body's vital energy (Qi). Mugwort is perhaps best known in spiritual communities for its extraordinary reputation as a dream herb, said to promote vivid, lucid, and prophetic dreaming when used as a pillow herb, smudge, or gentle tea. It is used widely in dreamwork, ritual, divination preparation, psychic development, and as a smudge for purification and spiritual protection.
For a powerful dreamwork and intuition blend, pair Mugwort with our Lavender to invite calm, open awareness before sleep. Add our Passionflower to deepen the relaxing, dream-supportive effect, or blend with our Valerian Root for a deeply grounding, sedative dream blend that anchors the spirit as it travels.
Mugwort is contraindicated during pregnancy as it is a uterine stimulant. It should not be consumed in large amounts or for extended periods. Those with allergies to the Asteraceae (daisy) family should use caution. Mugwort may enhance the effects of sedative medications. As always, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
