Long revered by the Cherokee, Haudenosaunee, and other Eastern Woodlands peoples of North America, Hydrastis canadensis — Goldenseal — was so prized by early American herbalists that it became one of the most traded medicinal plants in the 19th century, earning its place as a foundational herb in both Indigenous healing and Western botanical medicine.
Goldenseal owes its potency to berberine, a naturally occurring alkaloid with well-documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Herbalists have traditionally used goldenseal to support immune function, soothe irritated mucous membranes, and promote healthy digestion. It is widely regarded as a powerful herb for respiratory and digestive wellness — particularly valuable when the immune system needs extra support during cold and flu season. In African American hoodoo and Southern folk magic traditions, goldenseal root has also been used in money-drawing and uncrossing formulas, valued for its protective and purifying energy.
For an immune-fortifying blend, goldenseal works synergistically with our Peppermint, which adds cooling clarity and digestive comfort, and Ginger Root for warming, circulatory stimulation. A small addition of Licorice Root rounds the blend with natural sweetness and soothes inflamed tissues.
Goldenseal should not be used long-term — limit use to 2–3 weeks at a time with breaks. It should be avoided during pregnancy, as it may stimulate uterine contractions. Goldenseal may interact with blood thinners, cyclosporine, and medications processed by the liver's CYP450 enzymes. As always, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
