Traded along ancient Silk Road routes for over 4,000 years, Glycyrrhiza glabra - Licorice - was documented in Assyrian clay tablets, Egyptian papyri, and the classical Chinese pharmacopoeia as one of the world's most treasured healing roots. Its name derives from the Greek words for "sweet root," and it remains among the most widely studied medicinal herbs on earth.
Licorice root is best known for its deeply soothing effect on the respiratory and digestive tracts. Traditionally used to ease dry, irritated throat tissue, calm occasional coughs, and support healthy bronchial function, it has also been a trusted digestive tonic for centuries, soothing the stomach lining and supporting liver health. Its natural sweetness comes from glycyrrhizin, a compound up to 50 times sweeter than sugar, which also carries notable anti-inflammatory properties. Modern herbalists also use licorice to support healthy adrenal function and as a gentle adaptogen for daily stress.
Licorice pairs beautifully with our Peppermint for a refreshing throat-soothing blend and with our Ginger Root for a warming digestive tonic. For a balanced, naturally sweet herbal tea with depth and warmth, blend with our Fennel Seed for a classic digestive trio.
Licorice root should not be consumed in large quantities or for extended periods without medical guidance. It may raise blood pressure and interact with corticosteroids, diuretics, and blood pressure medications. Those with heart disease, kidney disease, hypertension, or low potassium levels should avoid regular licorice root consumption. As always, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.

1. Add 1 teaspoon of dried licorice root to an infuser or tea strainer.
2. Pour 8 oz of freshly boiled water (200-212 degrees F) over the root.
3. Steep for 5-10 minutes. Longer steeping produces a sweeter, stronger infusion.
4. Strain and drink as-is. The natural sweetness of licorice root typically requires no added sweetener.
5. Drink 1-2 cups per day. Avoid daily use for more than 4-6 weeks without a break.
For a more potent extraction, licorice root may be decocted: simmer 1 teaspoon in 2 cups of water for 15-20 minutes, then strain and drink.
