A close cousin of the North American blueberry, Vaccinium myrtillus — Bilberry — grows wild across the forests and moorlands of northern Europe and was deeply embedded in the folk medicine of Scandinavia, the British Isles, and the Alps. During World War II, British Royal Air Force pilots reportedly consumed bilberry jam before night missions, believing it sharpened their night vision — a story that sparked decades of modern research into the fruit's remarkable visual health benefits.
Bilberry Fruit is among the richest known dietary sources of anthocyanins — a class of flavonoid antioxidants responsible for its deep blue-black color. These compounds are particularly valued for their affinity for the microvasculature of the eyes, where they are believed to support retinal health, improve circulation to ocular tissue, and help protect against oxidative stress that accumulates from screen exposure and aging. Modern research has also explored bilberry's role in supporting healthy vascular function broadly — including capillary integrity, platelet aggregation, and blood sugar balance. Its antioxidant profile also makes it a strong general immune and longevity-supportive botanical.
For a powerful eye and antioxidant support blend, combine Bilberry Fruit with our Eyebright — one of the oldest documented herbs for visual wellness — and our Rose Hips, which deliver a high-vitamin-C complement to bilberry's anthocyanins. Our Elderberries round out the blend with their own rich flavonoid content for immune and antioxidant synergy.
Bilberry is generally very well tolerated at typical dietary and supplement amounts. Those on blood thinners, diabetes medications, or blood pressure medications should use with awareness, as bilberry may have mild interactions with these drug classes. High doses over extended periods may affect platelet function. As always, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
