Clinging to the rocky shores and tidal pools of the North Atlantic and Pacific coasts, Fucus vesiculosus — Bladderwrack — has been harvested by coastal peoples for food and medicine for thousands of years, from the seaweed gatherers of Ireland and Scotland to the Indigenous peoples of both American coasts. Its air-filled bladders (vesicles) give it both its common name and its characteristic buoyancy in the surf.

Bladderwrack is among the most iodine-rich foods on Earth — a distinction that has made it the cornerstone of thyroid-supportive herbal protocols for centuries. Iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones T3 and T4, which govern metabolism, energy, temperature regulation, and hormonal balance broadly. Beyond its thyroid-specific role, Bladderwrack contains alginic acid, fucoidan, and a broad spectrum of minerals including iron, calcium, magnesium, and selenium — making it a genuine sea-source superfood. Fucoidan, a polysaccharide found primarily in brown seaweeds like Bladderwrack, has attracted significant research interest for its potential anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and immune-modulating properties. In the tradition of sea magic and ocean-connected spiritual practices, seaweeds like Bladderwrack have long been used in spells and rituals for abundance, safe travel, and sea power — tied to the elemental energy of the ocean itself.

For a powerful sea-mineral thyroid and metabolic support blend, pair Bladderwrack with our Nettle Leaf — a mineral-dense land herb that complements the ocean's gifts — and our Irish Sea Moss for a synergistic multi-seaweed mineral formula. Round out with our Dandelion Leaf for liver and metabolic detox support.

Bladderwrack is very high in iodine and should not be taken in large amounts by those with thyroid conditions — including hyperthyroidism or autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's or Graves') — without medical supervision. Iodine excess can both trigger and exacerbate thyroid dysfunction. Those on thyroid medications should consult their physician before use. Bladderwrack may also contain trace environmental contaminants from ocean water; source quality matters significantly. As always, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.

* One of the richest dietary sources of natural iodine for healthy thyroid function
* Contains fucoidan — researched for anti-inflammatory and immune properties
* Broad-spectrum sea mineral content: iron, calcium, magnesium, selenium & more
* Traditionally used to support healthy metabolism and energy balance
* Alginic acid content supports digestive health and toxin binding
* Used in ocean-connected spiritual traditions for abundance and elemental sea power

1. Measure 1 teaspoon of dried Bladderwrack per 8 oz of water.
2. Add to cold water, bring to a simmer, and steep covered for 10–15 minutes.
3. Strain and drink warm — the flavor is distinctly oceanic and mineral-rich.
4. Drink 1 cup daily as a mineral tonic. Do not exceed 1–2 cups per day given the high iodine content.
5. Can be blended with Nettle Leaf, Irish Sea Moss, and Dandelion Leaf for a full mineral and thyroid-supportive blend.

Also excellent added in small amounts (1/2 tsp) to soups, broths, or smoothies as a mineral-boosting supplement.
