Harvested from the cold, mineral-rich waters of the North Atlantic, this pairing brings together Chondrus crispus — true Irish Sea Moss — and Fucus vesiculosus, Bladderwrack, named for the small air bladders along its fronds that lift it upright when the tide comes in. Coastal peoples in Ireland, the Caribbean and West Africa built sea vegetables into ordinary food centuries ago. Chondrus crispus is the only sea moss species we work with. Several different organisms are sold under that name and they are not the same plant.
Sea vegetables grow in mineral-rich water and take that richness into themselves, which is what nutrient dense actually means. A plant carrying a wide spectrum of nourishment does not decide in advance what it is for. Your body decides. Where you are depleted is usually where you notice it first, which is why one person's experience of sea moss is a poor prediction of yours. Traditionally used to support daily nourishment and mineral intake. Sea moss also carries carrageenan, a natural prebiotic fiber that feeds the beneficial bacteria already living in the gut.
There is a second layer to this work. Plants respond to the person handling them. What you bring to a plant and the relationship you build with it are not decoration on top of the chemistry. They are part of it, which is why two people can follow the same preparation and arrive at two different medicines.
Most pleasantly prepared by adding Ginger Root, Lemon Balm and Spearmint — their bright, cooling flavors offset the oceanic saltiness while supporting digestion.
Bladderwrack is naturally high in iodine. Those with thyroid conditions, taking thyroid medication or with a known iodine sensitivity should speak with a qualified practitioner before use. As always, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
