One of the most ancient members of the mint family, Mentha pulegium ā Pennyroyal ā has been documented in European herbalism since the first century CE, appearing in the writings of Roman physician Pliny the Elder and in medieval apothecary records across the British Isles and Mediterranean. Known for its intensely pungent, mintlike aroma and flavor, it was historically used as a digestive aid, insect repellent, and respiratory herb in households across Europe and the Americas.
Pennyroyal is a warming, pungent herb in the mint family traditionally valued for its ability to support digestion, ease flatulence, and act as a mild respiratory decongestant and expectorant. Its strongly aromatic volatile oils ā dominated by pulegone ā account for both its therapeutic and its potent character. Pennyroyal must be used in very small amounts and only under the guidance of a qualified herbalist, particularly for internal use. In European folk magic traditions, pennyroyal has long been used for protection and energetic purification ā worn in sachets, scattered to repel negativity, and burned as a cleansing incense herb.
In very small amounts within a respiratory blend, Pennyroyal may be combined with Mullein Leaf, Spearmint, and Egyptian Chamomile for mild decongestant support ā use only a small pinch of pennyroyal relative to the other herbs.
ā ļø IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE: Pennyroyal contains pulegone, which is toxic to the liver and kidneys in elevated doses. Pennyroyal is strictly contraindicated during pregnancy as it can cause miscarriage. Pennyroyal essential oil must never be consumed internally. The dried herb in very small tea amounts has been traditionally used but requires qualified herbalist guidance. Keep away from children and pets. As always, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
