A low-growing, prickly evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean coast and southwestern Europe, Ruscus aculeatus — Butcher's Broom — takes its name from its historical use by European butchers, who bound the stiff, bristly stems into brooms to sweep and scrub their wooden cutting boards. What the butchers may not have known was that this humble shop-floor tool was also a potent plant medicine with remarkable effects on the venous circulation system.

Butcher's Broom is one of the most clinically studied herbs for venous insufficiency — the condition in which veins in the legs lose their tone and fail to efficiently return blood to the heart, leading to aching, swelling, heaviness, varicose veins, and leg fatigue. Its steroidal saponins — primarily ruscogenin and neoruscogenin — appear to exert a direct toning and anti-inflammatory effect on venous walls, reducing permeability, improving tone, and supporting healthy blood return from the extremities. It is widely used in European phytomedicine for conditions including chronic venous insufficiency, hemorrhoids, post-surgical edema, and the heaviness and swelling that comes from long periods of standing or sitting. It is also a mild diuretic and may help reduce localized fluid accumulation in the lower limbs. Historically, the stems of Butcher's Broom have been used in ritual brooms for cleansing and clearing — sweeping away stagnation and negative energy from sacred spaces.

For a comprehensive circulatory and venous health blend, pair Butcher's Broom with our Hawthorn Berry for cardiovascular and capillary tonic support, our Ginkgo Biloba for peripheral circulation and blood flow, and our Ginger Root for warming circulatory stimulation throughout the body.

Butcher's Broom may interact with alpha-blocker medications and blood pressure medications. It should be used with care by those with high blood pressure or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), as its saponins may affect smooth muscle tone. Not recommended during pregnancy. Those with known allergies to plants in the Asparagaceae family should use with caution. As always, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.

* Premier venous tonic — supports healthy vein tone and blood return from the legs
* Traditionally used for varicose veins, leg swelling, and chronic venous insufficiency
* Clinically studied steroidal saponins (ruscogenin) tone and protect venous walls
* Supports relief from heavy, aching legs and standing/sitting-related leg fatigue
* Used for hemorrhoids and post-surgical edema in European phytomedicine
* Mild diuretic that helps reduce lower-limb fluid retention

1. Measure 1–2 teaspoons of Butcher's Broom root or rhizome per 8 oz of water.
2. Add to cold water, bring to a simmer, and decoct covered for 15–20 minutes.
3. Strain and drink warm.
4. Drink 1–2 cups daily for venous and circulatory support.
5. For best results, consistent daily use over 4–8 weeks is recommended — this is a tonic herb that builds effect gradually.

Pair with Hawthorn Berry and Ginkgo Biloba for a comprehensive cardiovascular and peripheral circulation support blend.
