Used in European herbal medicine for over 2,000 years, Agrimonia Eupatoria — Agrimony — was a staple of medieval monasteries and the healing courts of ancient Rome and Greece, where it was prized as a gentle astringent tonic for wounds, digestion, and the liver. Known in British folk herbalism as "Church Steeples" or "Fairy's Wand" for its tall, slender flower spikes, Agrimony has remained a trusted herb in Western botanical traditions from antiquity through the present.
Agrimony is traditionally valued for its gentle astringent, anti-inflammatory, and toning effects on the digestive system. Herbalists reach for Agrimony to support healthy digestion, ease occasional bloating and discomfort, and promote healthy liver and gallbladder function. Its tannin-rich profile makes it a traditional remedy for soothing the gut lining and supporting normal elimination. Modern herbalists also appreciate Agrimony’s mild calming properties, which may help ease tension and support restful sleep when the nervous system feels overextended. In the Bach flower remedy system, Agrimony is the remedy for genuine inner peace — the herb for those who mask inner turmoil with a cheerful exterior. In British folk magic, it holds a long tradition as a protective herb used in sachets and placed beneath pillows to promote deep, undisturbed sleep.
Agrimony’s mild, pleasantly bitter, and slightly sweet character makes it a wonderful base for digestive and calming blends. Pair it with our Egyptian Chamomile for a gentle evening tea that soothes both body and spirit, our Lemon Balm to add a bright citrus lift and additional nervine support, and our Peppermint for digestive relief and a refreshing, cooling finish.
Agrimony is generally very well tolerated. Its tannin content may reduce the absorption of iron and certain medications — allow 2 hours between Agrimony tea and supplements or medications. It may have mild diuretic properties; those with kidney conditions should use caution. Long-term safety in pregnancy has not been fully studied; avoid therapeutic use without professional guidance. As always, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
