Hydrangea Root

Drawn from the woodlands of Eastern North America and used for generations by the Cherokee nation to treat urinary disorders and kidney discomfort, Hydrangea arborescens — Hydrangea Root — became one of the most important herbs of 19th-century Eclectic physicians, who documented its remarkable affinity for the kidneys and urinary tract in extensive clinical records.

Hydrangea Root is best known in Western herbalism as a urinary tonic and kidney stone-supportive herb. Its roots contain unique compounds — including hydrangin and 7-O-methylhydrangenol — that are traditionally associated with supporting the body's natural ability to break down and pass mineral deposits in the kidneys and urinary tract. Modern herbalists use hydrangea root in kidney support formulas for those managing urinary gravel, bladder discomfort, and prostate health. It has a mildly sweet taste with a slightly bitter finish, making it one of the more palatable medicinal roots. 1. Measure 1–2 teaspoons of Hydrangea Root per 8 oz cup.
2. Combine with cold water and bring to a gentle boil. Simmer (decoct) for 20 minutes, covered.
3. Strain, allow to cool, and drink warm.
4. Drink 1–2 cups daily as a kidney support tonic. Use for 4–6 week cycles with breaks.
5. Combine with Horsetail Herb and Nettle Leaf for a comprehensive urinary support blend.

For stronger extraction: use 1–2 tablespoons of root per quart of water and simmer for 30 minutes to make a concentrated decoction. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
