One of the most powerful and extensively used plants in North American folk medicine, Phytolacca americana — Poke Root — has been employed by Indigenous peoples throughout eastern North America, including the Cherokee and Iroquois nations, as well as by 19th-century Eclectic physicians, as a potent lymphatic herb and traditional anti-rheumatic. All parts of the pokeweed plant are considered toxic; poke root has historically been used medicinally only under careful expert guidance in small, graduated doses.

Poke Root is one of the most respected — and powerful — lymphatic herbs in the North American materia medica. In traditional and Eclectic herbal practice, it is used in very small doses to stimulate stagnant lymphatic circulation, support the body during swollen glands, and encourage the lymphatic system to process accumulated toxins. Modern professional herbalists may include poke root in drop-dose tincture formulas under clinical supervision. In Hoodoo and African American folk magic traditions, poke root is a powerful protective herb used for breaking hexes, clearing negativity, and providing strong spiritual protection — carried, placed in sachets, or used in protective preparations.

In traditional lymphatic protocols (under expert guidance), Poke Root has been paired with Red Clover Blossoms, Nettle Leaf, and Ginger Root as a lymph-moving, blood-cleansing formula — always prepare and use under the supervision of a trained herbalist.

āš ļø CRITICAL SAFETY NOTICE: Poke Root is toxic and dangerous if improperly used. All parts of the pokeweed plant are poisonous. Internal use requires expert herbalist guidance, only in very small doses — typically tincture drop doses. Strictly contraindicated during pregnancy. Not suitable for self-medication. Keep away from children and animals. As always, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.

* Powerful traditional North American lymphatic herb used in drop doses by trained herbalists
* Cherokee and Iroquois tradition for swollen glands and lymphatic stagnation support
* Used in Hoodoo and African American spiritual tradition for protection and clearing negativity
* Requires expert herbalist guidance — not suitable for self-medication or unsupervised internal use
* For ritual, spiritual, and professional herbal use only unless working with a qualified practitioner

Note: Poke Root is a professional-grade herb. Do NOT prepare or consume without guidance from a trained herbalist or healthcare practitioner.

1. Drop-dose tincture (1–3 drops of tincture in water, 1–3x daily) is the most common supervised method of internal use historically documented.
2. External applications: Strong cooled decoctions have traditionally been used topically for skin conditions under practitioner guidance only.
3. Ritual and spiritual use: Poke Root can be placed in protective sachets or herb bundles without internal consumption.
4. Always source from a reputable herb supplier and keep out of reach of children and animals.
