All tea — white, green, oolong, and black — comes from the same plant: Camellia sinensis, native to the mountains of Yunnan Province in southwest China. What makes Black Tea distinct is its full oxidation, a process that transforms the leaf's polyphenols, deepens its flavor to a rich, malty robustness, and concentrates particular antioxidants called theaflavins and thearubigins unique to oxidized tea. Humans have been drinking tea from this plant for at least 5,000 years — and Black Tea has been the dominant form consumed in the Western world since European traders first carried it from China in the 17th century.

Black Tea is a natural source of caffeine and L-theanine — an amino acid that promotes calm, focused alertness without the jitteriness of coffee — making it a refined choice for mental clarity, productive energy, and sustained concentration. It is rich in polyphenols that support cardiovascular health by promoting healthy cholesterol balance and arterial function, and its theaflavin content has been studied for prebiotic effects that support a diverse gut microbiome. Black Tea is also a source of fluoride and manganese, supporting dental and bone health respectively. In many spiritual and folk traditions, tea has served as a vehicle for divination (tasseography — reading tea leaves) and as a grounding daily ritual that centers the mind before meditation or ceremony.

For a warming, aromatic chai-inspired blend, pair Black Tea with our Ginger Root and Cinnamon (Ceylon) — two of the classic chai warming spices — and brighten the cup with a dose of our Lemon Peel for a citrus-forward, antioxidant-rich morning tea.

Black Tea contains caffeine — typically 40–70 mg per cup. Those sensitive to caffeine, or who experience anxiety, insomnia, or elevated heart rate with caffeinated beverages, should limit intake. Black Tea may inhibit iron absorption from plant foods when consumed with meals — those managing iron-deficiency anemia should drink it between meals. Black Tea may interact with certain medications including MAOIs. As always, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.

* Natural source of caffeine plus L-theanine for calm, focused mental clarity
* Rich in theaflavins and thearubigins — antioxidants unique to oxidized tea
* Supports healthy cardiovascular function and cholesterol balance
* Prebiotic compounds in black tea support a diverse gut microbiome
* Source of fluoride and manganese for dental and bone support
* A grounding daily ritual honored in tea-drinking cultures for over 5,000 years

1. Measure 1–2 teaspoons of Black Tea per 8 oz of water.
2. Heat water to 200–212°F (just off a rolling boil).
3. Pour over tea and steep for 3–5 minutes. Steeping longer than 5 minutes increases bitterness.
4. Strain and enjoy as-is, or with a splash of plant milk and a touch of honey for a chai-style preparation.
5. Drink 1–4 cups daily.

For a homemade chai: combine 1 tsp Black Tea with 1/2 tsp Ginger Root, 1/4 tsp Ceylon Cinnamon, and a pinch of Cloves. Simmer in 1 cup water + 1 cup plant milk for 5 minutes before straining.
